David Smith, CEO
David Smith is an internationally-recognized expert in the areas of new media application, media strategy, media planning and metrics. As a veteran in the area of advertising media management, his experience is drawn from the creation of the first-generation advertising technology to dealing with today’s issues surrounding metrics in the digital marketplace.

At the forefront of new metrics applications, David’s has deep advisory board and industry committee involvement where he works to establish and refine standards in metrics, business practices and financial issues for interactive advertising.

With a number of awards to his name, including an Effie, David was also awarded the first-ever ad:tech Industry Achievement Award. This accolade recognized his long-term dedication and consistent outstanding service to the digital marketing industry.
Karen McFee, Executive Vice President
Karen has had her finger on the pulse of the digital advertising world for over a decade. She co-founded Mediasmith with David L. Smith where she has specialized in the synergy between the worlds of advertising and technology. In her role as Executive Vice President, Karen is involved with the agency’s e-commerce, branding and B2B clients supervising their fully-integrated media plans.

As a recognized expert, Karen optimizes media buys for Fortune 500 companies and major advertisers. Her traditional media planning and buying experience enables her to provide a unique perspective successfully leading both the firm and select client relationships.

Prior to co-founding Mediasmith, Karen was at Hawk Media, where she was involved with all levels of media planning and media management. Her clients included retail, food, B2B, apparel, travel, entertainment, media and technology with broad expertise across all media types.

Karen developed her media expertise with stints at Foote, Cone and Belding, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and Ketchum Advertising, San Francisco in senior media positions. Karen began her career at Clinton E. Frank in Chicago, exhibiting superior negotiating skills early on by securing a transfer to CEF's San Francisco office.

Karen graduated from Northern Illinois University. During her free time, she enjoys travel and photography.
Derek Leedy, SVP, Client Services
Derek Leedy has worked in media and marketing since 1995, having held management positions at both the agency and client side of the business. As head of client services, he is responsible for overseeing internal team management and leading client strategy. This involves working with the media team to provide the architecture and implementation for successful campaigns that incorporate the most effective mix of digital, traditional and emerging media. Additionally, he works on new business, creative and media integration, and participates in thought leadership through writing and speaking.

His clients have included Netscape, Sega,, Napster, NetApp and World Vision, giving him expertise on Entertainment, Consumer, B2B, and Non-profit accounts. Derek’s work has garnered him industry recognition including being named an OMMA “Rising Star,” a Creative Media Award, and an Effie for Advertising Effectiveness.

He is a graduate of UC Berkeley.
John Cate, EVP and General Manager
John Cate has worked in the industry for more than 20 years and offers expertise in traditional and digital media strategy and agency operations. As EVP and General Manager of Mediasmith, Cate will assume media management responsibilities in addition to joining the Mediasmith Executive Committee.

Cate has expertise in integrating traditional and digital media, and has worked with a diverse array of clients, including packaged goods, enterprise technology, financial services, consumer electronics, and retail. His experience in operations includes revenue reporting, talent acquisition, organizational and service line design, pricing/compensation and revenue generation.

Cate previously held the role of EVP and General Manager for Carat/Aegis PLC. He has also been the VP Media Director for Leftfield PLC, TBWA Chiat/Day, Ketchum Advertising, and was Assistant Media Director for McCann Erikson.

Cate has a degree in advertising from San Jose State University.
