BIOS
John Butler, Founder, Executive Creative Director
John is the executive creative director and a founding partner of BSSP. He has, at one time or another, walked the halls of McCann-Erickson, J. Walter Thompson, Chiat\Day and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. While working at Chiat, John met his partner of over 25 years, Mike Shine. The pair moved out West for senior positions at Goodby, where they met partner Greg Stern, and in 1993 opened Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners. John is a former One Club president and currently resides in San Rafael, CA with his wife and two children. As executive creative director of BSSP, John is ultimately responsible for the creative output of the agency.
Greg Stern, Founder, Chief Executive Officer
Greg, a founding partner of BSSP, offers over 26 years of advertising and marketing experience in the U.S. and abroad. After graduating from Brown University, Greg began his career at Ogilvy & Mather, New York, where his assignments included American Express and Seagram. He moved with O&M, first to Hong Kong and later to Indonesia, where, as managing director, he grew that office substantially and established divisions in direct marketing, public relations and promotions for clients including Unilever, Nestle, Toyota and Pepsi. Greg returned to the United States to Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, where he ran the Sega business, among others. In 1993, he partnered with John Butler and Mike Shine to start Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners. Greg has been featured as an industry expert in media including ABC and NBC News, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and USA Today, and has been a guest lecturer at Stanford and UC Berkeley business schools. He currently sits on the boards of SFJAZZ and the 4A’s (American Association of Advertising Agencies), and is an advisor and board member to various technology start-ups.
Patrick Kiss, Managing Director, Partner
Patrick brought 20 years of experience on a diverse set of brands when he joined Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners in January 2003. He joined BSSP from Foote, Cone & Belding, San Francisco, where for seven years he led the agency’s new business efforts and worked on a range of accounts, including Janus Mutual Funds, Esurance, Dockers, Major League Baseball, Coors, MTV, Sega, Levi Strauss International and Outward Bound, to name a few.
Prior to FCB, Patrick spent 10 years at Ogilvy & Mather in New York, Australia, Hong Kong and London. He worked on American Express personal, gold and corporate cards during key expansion years for their business, and was also assigned to a broad range of consumer businesses including Kraft Foods, Unilever, the Economist, Hilton Hotels and the pro bono Prevention of Teen Suicide. Patrick’s extensive experience across a spectrum of brands and categories has heightened his appreciation for ideas that can truly transform a client’s business. At BSSP, Patrick is responsible for the agency’s growth efforts and oversees the client service and project management functions. He’s the partner overseeing current businesses including ZICO, Greyhound and El Pollo Loco. He sits on the board of Worldwide Partners, a group of independent agencies with offices in 56 countries. BSSP is a member of this global network.
Ed Cotton, Director of Strategy and Innovation, Partner
Ed graduated from Oxford Polytechnic with a degree in business. He then joined McCann Erickson Europe’s marketing-consultancy division, working on Black & Decker, Del Monte and Martini. He soon took on a role in international account planning on the Boot’s and Levi’s businesses. Following jobs at Lowe Howard-Spink and Woollams Moira Gaskin O’Malley, he became a founding partner in Europe’s first Gen-X agency, Magic Hat. There, he helped build the client roster to include Rolling Rock, Unilever, Bacardi-Martini and commercial projects for the Spice Girls. In the mid-90s he moved to McCann Erickson in Seattle. Ed won a gold Effie for his work on PowerAde and also helped launch Washington Mutual bank in California. Ed joined BSSP in 1999. As director of strategy, Ed leads brand-strategy development efforts for our clients, including consumer research and data analytics. Ed also started one of the earliest and most popular marketing blogs, www.influxinsights.com, and was recently recognized by Adweek as one of the 25 best advertising voices on Twitter.
Lynda Richardson, Media Director
Lynda began her career as a media professional with training at big agencies such as McCann-Erickson, Ogilvy & Mather and Foote, Cone & Belding. Before joining BSSP, Lynda worked at Microsoft for two years, where she was the media director and lead product manager responsible for media in the U.S. and for better defining the business decision-maker audience. Prior to that, Lynda worked at the San Francisco agency Anderson & Lembke on the Microsoft account, where she led teams for the Windows 98, Windows NT and Internet Explorer launches, helping Internet Explorer go from a 15% market share to just over 50% market share in less than a year. Lynda joined BSSP in 2001. As media director, she is the media strategy lead and oversees all media planning and buying for clients including MINI, Greyhound, and Columbia Sportswear. Her leadership has helped the BSSP media department win Mediaweek’s Media Plan of the Year for their work on MINI, be recognized as a finalist for two of MEDIA magazine’s Creative Media Awards—Best Use of Out of Home and Best Communications Channel Plan—and be nominated for MEDIA magazine’s Media Department of the Year award.
Neal Zimmermann, Executive Design Director, Partner
Early in his career, Neal was senior art director at Levi Strauss & Co., where he worked on a variety of design, communications systems and 2-D/3-D retail solutions. In 1988, Neal co-founded Zimmermann Crowe Design/VehicleSF. As principal and creative director, he worked with Nike, Levi’s, Electronic Arts, Wells Fargo Bank, the Discovery Channel, the Nature Company and others. Neal founded ZDI in 2002, where he continued working on retail initiatives for Nike and headed up the Cannondale Bicycle account. Neal has been featured internationally in Graphis. His work is in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress and has been featured in Communication Arts, Print, AIGA annuals, LA|Type Directors annuals and the San Francisco Show. Neal oversees the design group at BSSP, including development of brand identity, collateral materials and retail experience.
John Sheehan, Director of Account Management
The invitation to join BSSP paved the way for John’s return to the West Coast, where he was appointed account director on the Converse business in June of 2004. John helped launch the brand’s celebrated Brand Democracy campaign, which garnered Clio, Gold Pencil and One Show awards while receiving extensive coverage in BusinessWeek, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and Creativity magazine. John was a key part of the brand’s return to sports performance as well, specifically with the launch of the Dwyane Wade signature shoe and apparel line. Since Converse, John has played a pivotal role in winning and launching campaigns for Epson (Epsonality), Columbia (The Greater Outdoors) and RadioShack (The Shack). In addition to being the director of the agency’s account team, John manages the Columbia, Nokia and Google businesses. Prior to BSSP, John was the management director at J. Walter Thompson New York, where he ran the Miller Genuine Draft, Foster’s Lager and Tanqueray gin brands. Prior to making the jump to New York, John had worked for most of his professional career at Foote, Cone & Belding, San Francisco on the Coors portfolio, as well as on Taco Bell and Major League Baseball. John has been involved with the 4A’s San Francisco ad program and the San Francisco Ad Club, and has been a speaker at Advertising Week in New York.
Chris Cardinal, Director of Strategic Integration
Chris joined BSSP in 2003 to run the Leap Wireless account, integrating the agency's advertising, online marketing, design and strategic planning functions. Since then he has gone on to run consulting projects for clients like Palm Inc. as well as accounts including Priceline.com and Sun Microsystems. Before joining BSSP, Chris was with J. Walter Thompson and Austin, Texas based GSD&M where he spearheaded interactive initiatives for Wal-Mart, MasterCard and SBC Wireless.
